EV Review | ID.4 Style Accents Should Add Up for U.S. Consumers
The ID.4 crossover SUV is impressive and provides a compact and cozy style that VW is known for, and the vehicle is making its way across Europe and U.S. in late 2020. A Bjørn Nyland video production.
Updated (11/22) | VW planned to sell a number of ID.4s in California in 2020, but are focusing on Europe, where stringent 2020 CO2 mandates are already in place. A VW company spokesperson (via Automotive News) indicated that the company hasn’t changed its plan for a “50-state launch across its network of 650 U.S. dealerships” in the first half of 2021.
VW is the bad boy automotive company, caught deceiving regulators with its rigged software for its “clean diesel” line of sedans and compacts — the software restricted sulfur emissions during testing, exceeding the legal limit by 25x.
However, in 2020, VW is all in with its MEB electric production platform for multiple electric cars and released the ID.3 to solid fanfare earlier this year (see here), but the ID.4 is the next step in creating a more enduring style.
The design is a leap away from the pedestrian, compact styling of the ID.3 and could convert many Americans to stray from Tesla. The Chevy Bolt is a great EV but it does lack styling and my theory is Americans want more design from EVs. Plus, the ID.4’s heads-up-display (HUD) is another techie carrot for those new drivers.
U.S. drivers get a chance to buy the ID.4 in 2020, according to news reports (see below):
Despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Volkswagen ID.4 electric crossover is still due to start deliveries later this year. An expansion of VW's Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory that will allow the ID.4 to later be built locally is also on schedule for 2022.
After watching Nyland’s video, the lines and cozy curves running throughout the car can’t be denied. This video breaks down the ID.4 “Max” and its 82 kWH battery, which translates to approximately 250 miles (403 km). Pricing is rumored to be approximately $40,000 in the U.S., and that’s pretty attractive with the $7,500 tax credit.
