For new EV owners, there can be an underlying fear and a sense of being overwhelmed due to so many new concepts at first: home charging needs, best practices for battery packs and, of course, how to find public charging stations. With public charging, new EV owners will eventually realize that there’s an abundance of visibility into public charging station availability via a car’s touchscreen interface, numerous charging network Apps, PlugShare and innovations like this new one from EVgo.

EVgo recently announced a much-needed solution for the west coast of the U.S. that provides customers the ability to reserve public charging stations up to two weeks ahead of time. This new service, called EVgo Reservations, allows registered users to reserve a charging station via the EVgo App for immediate and future use. There are two options under this new offering: the EVgo Reserve Now is for day-to-day driving needs while the Reserve by Date allows a user to specify a date and time for a future session.
According to EVgo, the Reserve by Date service “is ideal for the driver without access to home charging who wants to set a regular time to charge, and customers are also interested in booking chargers ahead when they will be traveling, according to recent survey data.
And there’s the day-to-day component, with 80% of EVgo customers reporting they’d like to shop or run other errands while charging.
The rollout is limited in California and in Washington, but EVgo registered users can visit evgo.com/reservations/ to find the specific charging station locations. The reservations process is done via the EVgo App and costs $3.00 to reserve a charger. Also, future reservations can be canceled up to 24 hours prior to the reservation start time for no additional cost.
This new offering is a great sign of innovation from EVgo, as California’s EV demand soars and lines are visible at many charging locations. At this point, California is anomaly with charging station demand and there was no other information from EVgo about expanding this service nationwide.
